Gertrude, le Monstre
You might have crossed paths with her, especially if you've ever lost a tooth on a Tuesday under a sugar moon. Gertrude loves hanging out with the tooth fairies—though she’s not technically one herself. Her wings are a bit too bouncy, and her antennae always glow at the wrong moment (making her terrible at hiding). Still, the fairies adore her, even when she sneaks in to a newly un-toothed younglin (what they call human children) just before the tooth fairy arrives and hides the tooth in silly places—inside socks, behind the pepper, or once, inside a pet axolotl's cave! But don’t worry—she always gives it back. Oh and they laugh!! Sometimes the belly laughs get so loud that a youngin almost wakes up! But a little fairy dust (and a well-timed yawn bubble) keeps everything dreamy and calm.
Gertrude lives in a floating thistle pod nestled inside a sugar maple tree, just past the bend of the burbling brook down by Thatcher's cottage. Her house smells like plums and stardust, and it's always a tiny bit sticky.
She drinks dew drops from upside-down mushrooms and collects fallen eyelashes to make wishes. And yes—she absolutely LOVES plums. One time she rolled a whole plum down a spider’s web slide and turned it into the world’s first plum trampoline. The spider wasn't too impressed, but they all know Gertrude is just having fun.
No one really knows where Gertrude will show up next, but if you hear tiny bouncy wings in the moonlight and smell a whiff of sugarplum and giggleburp, she’s probably nearby.
